Alumni House

The Alumni House was originally crafted for the Beverly Hutchison family. The house is very unique in its design and boasts a plethora of remarkable features. Trademark beadwork carvings surround three fireplace mantels on the first floor, and an ornate walnut staircase leads to the upstairs rooms. The porch also has intricate hand-carved wood trim.

Perhaps the most significant aspect of the Alumni House is its tie to former president of the United States, Lyndon Baines Johnson. In the 1920’s the house was purchased by R.E. Miller and transformed into a boarding residence for university students. LBJ was one of those residents of the house in 1928 while he attended Texas State.

The San Marcos Urban Renewal Agency recommended that the building be used by the Texas State Alumni Association in 1966. Two years later, the Alumni House was formally dedicated to President Lyndon Johnson. The house has received the President’s Ranch Medallion and the Texas Historical Medallion.

The Alumni House is part of the scenic Texas Hill Country Tour. Restoration of the interior of the house began in 1981 by Dr. Mary L. Spence, granddaughter of Beverly Hutchinson, the original owner of the house. The wood floors were refinished, and plantation shutters, oriental rugs, and period-style wallpaper were added. Some original Hutchison furniture is still used in the house today. Additions to the house furnishings are the actual desk and chair used by President Lyndon Johnson to sign the Higher Education Act in 1965.

The house is made available to faculty, staff, and alumni for meetings and receptions. The Texas State Alumni Association is a service group for all former Texas State students. The Alumni Association offices are located in the Alumni House.

The Texas State Alumni Association draws on the past to enhance the future in education through the contributions and talents of alumni and friends. The Association is the communication link that forges a strong bond between alumni and the university. It serves the present and future alumni by actively supporting the University’s goals, values, and accomplishments and by advancing the quality and stature of Texas State. The Texas State Alumni Association welcomes visitors and friends to stop by the house Monday through Friday 8 - 5 pm.
